NSW trade licences are now digital

As we all know, any NSW builder needs a building licence before they can do any contracted residential building work in NSW.

NSW Fair Trading has just announced that a range of licences will be digitised.

Licences that are now digitally available are:

  • High-Risk Work Licence
  • Qualified Supervisor and Tradesperson Certificates
  • Contractor Licence
  • Digital White Card

These digital licences are a free, optional alternative to a physical card, making it easier than ever to stay on top of licence expiries, check credentials and ensure all tradespeople remain certified for the work they do.

It’s important to note these digital licences don’t fully replace your physical card yet, a plastic version will still be issued.

Benefits of having a digital licence:

Updates in real time

Digital trade licences update in real-time, so you don’t have to wait for a new plastic card to be posted when your digital version is renewed or replaced if you change your details.

This also makes it easier than ever to stay on top of expiry dates and ensure your licences are always valid, so you're never caught out looking for your licence information.

You can even view your digital trade licence when you have no data coverage, as long as you stay logged in to the Service NSW app.

Cost

It’s completely free to upload your licences to the Service NSW app on your phone.

Security

Your licence is protected by the security on your smartphone (for example, PIN, fingerprint and facial recognition) as well as the security of the Service NSW app.

To ensure the security and privacy of licence holders, Fair Trading NSW has built strong partnerships with cyber security and identity theft experts.

This has resulted in comprehensive security measures to protect your information and identity at all times, similar to those used for internet banking.

Lost

If you lose your smartphone, your digital licences and authorisations are protected by your phone’s PIN, your Service NSW app PIN and, if available, your face/touch ID.

Verify your credentials on the spot

If licence checkers, such as safety officers and site supervisors, need to know how to verify a digital trade licence or credential, your digital licence contains features that confirm it is authentic and current, reducing the risk of identity fraud or hiring an unlicensed worker.

All digital trade licences and credentials can be accepted at worksites in place of the physical card.

How to get your digital licence

It takes less than three minutes to upload a digital trade licence to your mobile phone. Join the 200,000+ people that have downloaded a digital trade licence.

You can access your licence online now from your Service NSW account and the Service NSW app.
